EVOO helps keep blood clot-free
A study recently published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition (Aug 2007) provides further evidence that olive oils have healthful benefits. Olive oil contains phenols, which have been shown to fight clotting in lab tests.
“Our findings provide new evidence of the healthy effects of virgin olive oil,” Dr. Francisco Perez-Jimenez of Reina Sofia University Hospital in Cordoba and colleagues conclude.
Researchers had 21 people with high cholesterol eat two different breakfasts. One group group’s breakfast included white bread coated with olive oil containing a typical amount of phenols. The second group’s bread was coated with olive oil with most of the phenols removed. The high-phenol group experienced reductions in two clot promoters - factor VII and plasminogen activator inhibitor-1.
“Although this study deals with the microcomponents of virgin olive oil, we should still think in terms of evaluating the biological properties of complete foods,” the researches add.
Also, the researchers suggest the reason other studies have provides inconsistent results regarding olive oil’s benefits may have been due to the variations in phenol content in the oils used.
