Want to learn more about olive oil? Welcome friend!

olive oil choices!

I take for granted the wonderful taste of fine olive oil. It always catches me off guard when someone says to me, "what's that?" Or "what's so special about olive oil. Aren’t all oils the same?" That one kills me! ;-) So I thought that I'd share my passion for olive oil with anyone who's interested. So... a bunch of friends and I have put together this site to help out the non-initiated get to know better what we love, and take for granted!

Faking It

Lucia

Sometimes my best friend can be a real pain in the–well, let’s just say part of the anatomy way south of the neck. You see, she thinks my crush on this guy we both know is really funny. I know she’ll tease me when I tell her why I wanted to talk to her.

I’d arranged to meet her last night at this wine bar we both like. I thought she could help me because she’d taught me everything I know about wine. Click to continue »

Everything Old is New Again (A brief history of olive oil)

Lucia

Quick! Name something that you can eat that’s been on this old planet for nearly ten thousand years. It’s also something that was and is used for medicine, beauty, cooking, and religious rituals. Oh, and a war was started over it too.

If this were the Jeopardy television show, the metronome would be ticking and that famous melody written by Merv Griffin would be playing in the background. But this isn’t TV. I’m just trying to think of something to stump my friends when we play trivia during our Friday evening attitude adjustment session at our favorite restaurant.

There’s this new guy someone brought to the group last Friday. Brian. He’s an accountant and a closet chef. You know. One of the new breed of men who watches Food Network, has real food in his refrigerator instead of take-out containers, and knows the difference between supermarket olive oil and cold-press extra virgin olive oil. I bet he won’t be able to name this mysterious something I described.

If this were the Jeopardy show, right about now, I’d be shouting: “What is olive oil?”

I must confess, I was astounded to find out humans have been consuming olive oil for thousands of years, but that’s what my mom told me.

You see, I’d given my mother a lesson in the value of olive oil as opposed to those supermarket vegetable oils she always bought. I convinced her to start using olive oil, but she wasn’t content just to order a bottle of extra virgin olive oil like mine. She had to research the subject and find out every little thing about olives and the oil from them. Click to continue »

An Oil By Any Other Name (What is Olive Oil?)

Lucia

Is your mom like mine? Always trying to tell you how to live your life as if you’re still ten-years-old instead of, well, let’s just say old enough to have learned a few things. At least about cooking.

Would you believe Mom thinks any oil is as good as any other for cooking? Sure, she’s heard about the health benefits of olive oil, but she still thinks that something labeled 100% vegetable oil is just as good as that fancy stuff I buy. And it’s a lot cheaper, she tells me. Very smugly I might add. Trust me, this woman who teaches American history and economics, knows the value of frugality.

Well, I must confess, I enjoyed teaching her a thing or two for a change. I took her bottle of vegetable oil. I won’t say the brand name here, but you know the bottle I mean. It’s been on the supermarket shelf since long before I was born. I poured a small amount in a shot glass, and then I poured a small amount of my extra virgin olive oil in another glass. (I won’t bore you with the interrogation–I mean, discussion–of why I had shot glasses labeled with the names of certain, uh, social establishments.)

I put the glasses side by side and Click to continue »
